MEMBERSHIP ADVANTAGES OF THE UTAH STATE POETRY SOCIETY:

 ASSOCIATION WITH OTHERS WHO SHARE A LOVE OF POETRY

Members meet in chapters around Utah,  with activities that include reading and discussing  each  other's  poems and learning  about poetry and  techniques.  They  hold  readings,  workshops,  etc.

The  April  Awards  Festival  and  October Book Concert,  honoring  the  Poet  of the Year, gather Utah  poets  together.  USPS  members are automatically  members  of   NFSPS   (the  National   Federation  of   State  Poetry Societies),  affording contact  with  poets  all over  the U.S.

 OPPORTUNITIES TO FIND OUTLETS FOR YOUR POETRY

USPS conducts a winter contest and an annual contest with numerous categories which members may enter to receive cash prizes  and  recognition.    Contests are judged  blind  by  qualified poets outside the Society.  

USPS publishes POETRY PANORAMA, a biannual anthology of members' poems.

Each year, USPS  publishes the book of an  outstanding  Utah  poet   (the  winning entry in the Book Category of the contest).

Every  ten  years  (mid-decade),  USPS publishes  UTAH SINGS,  a  large anthology  of  poetry  by  Utahns.

 NFSPS conducts  an annual contest,  also judged  blind,  with  top  winners  being  published  in  their  annual  anthology.    Utah poets regularly take many  of  the prizes.

 EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Workshops  are  offered  in  which  the techniques of writing poems are explored by competent and distinguished writers.

Critiques  by qualified poets  are available to  USPS  members through the Critique Bureau.

Nationally  known   poets  and  university instructors are invited to lecture and instruct at local and national events.

 AS A MEMBER, YOU ARE ENTITLED TO:

Receive  the  POET  TREE  newsletter,   the NFSPS STROPHES newsletter, the POETRY  PANORAMA  anthology,  to  which  members may  submit  poems for  consideration  for  publication,  a copy of the Book of the Year,  a  directory of members,  and direct notification of  state  contests,  workshops,  and  other events.

Attend  chapter  meetings,  workshops, conventions,  and  other  events  sponsored by USPS.

Enter  all  categories  of  the annual contests  sponsored  by USPS  and NFSPS, at lower fees.

Attend   the annual  NFSPS convention.

Submit 12 poems per year to the Critique Bureau  for  free critiques  by  qualified poets.
