New poetry event: Poetry in the Park, March 12, 2010

Poetry in the Park, a one-day poetry reading/writing workshop, hosted  by Zion Canyon Field Institute in cooperation with the Utah State Poetry Society, will be held in Zion National Park Friday, March 12, 2010. Poet Presenter will be acclaimed author, poet, and editor N. Colwell Snell, a University of Utah graduate with a BA in English, who has been published in many magazines and anthologies including ByLine, Bay Area Poets’ Coalition, California Quarterly, Comstock Review, Oasis Journal, Weber the Contemporary West, Nine One One, By the Throat, and elsewhere. He won 1st Runner-up in the William Faulkner-William Wisdom poetry contest 2006 and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2005.

Mr. Snell has a national reputation as a skilled craftsman. His poems touch the heart, challenge the intellect, and his humor is unequalled. His manuscript, Hand Me My Shadow, won the Pearle  M. Olsen Book Award in 2007, and he was named 2007 Utah State Poetry Society Poet of the Year. He has served as editor for several publications including Utah Sings. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Salt Lake City.

The public, those not USPS members, can register for Poetry in the Park through Zion Canyon field Institute ($50 fee) at http://www.zionpark.org/product_66.html.  

PIP Participants will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Zion Nature Center in Zion National Park for a poetry reading, workshops, and writing challenges. (A car pool from St. George will be organized for  those who wish to participate.) We suggest bringing binoculars and a camera, as the morning will include a walk in the park with a Field Institute naturalist after the first session. Bring your own sack lunch. Workshop and writing time will resume from 1:00 to 3:00 in the Nature Center, with a reading of participant's work beginning at 3:00. A group book project will be offered as an option for nominal cost of publication. Those participating are invited to attend the Redrock Writers Seminar "Evening with the Authors" program 7:00 that evening, Friday March 12, a session that is free to the public. Attending Saturday's Redrock Seminar requires a separate registration. See below:

REDROCK WRITERS FOURTEENTH ANNUAL WRITERS SEMINAR:  PIP is designed to coincide with the 14th annual Red Rock Writers Seminar, which requires a separate registration. Winners of the Chaparral Poetry Forum will be recognized Saturday evening at 7 p.m. with $1,000 in prizes awarded . This year saw 273 entries from 28 states. Utah poets did well.
