2008 CONTEST RULES
1. POSTMARK DEADLINE: February 1, 2008.
All USPS contests are judged double-blind by judges who are not members of USPS.
2. To contest as a member, annual dues ($25 regular, $15 student) must be postmarked by the 5th day of January, 2008. For membership information, contact Rosalyn Ostler, email: rosieo1@juno.com or phone 801-943-4211.
3. Any poem submitted must:
A. follow line limit and form specified in each category
B. be the original work of the contestant
C. be unpublished at the time of entering (exception: Pearle M. Olsen Book Publication, see category 44 for details)
D. be titled (exception: haiku)
E. be in good taste
F. not have won a cash award in any Utah contest
G. not be changed or withdrawn
4. No poem may be entered in more than one category. Exception: an unpublished poem included in the Olsen Book category may be entered in one other category.
5. Entry fees:
A. Members may enter ONE poem per category for one $15 fee. Members entering fewer than 15 poems total may pay $1 per poem entered.
Exceptions: Category #2, $hoot for the Loot (no limit to number of entries, but each entry requires a $5 fee). Category #44, Pearle M. Olsen Book Publication Award, is limited to one entry for a $20 reading fee. See category #44 for all details.
B. Nonmember fee is $2 per poem. Nonmembers may enter one poem in each category specified "also open to nonmembers" and marked with ** before category number.
C. Write one check or money order, payable to USPS. Exception: book entry fee accompanies manuscript to Book Chair (check Category #44 for complete instructions when entering Pearle M. Olsen Book Publication Award).
D. Do not staple or tape entry fee to entries.
6. Preparation of entries (For book entry, see category #44 instructions):
A. Two clear copies, single-spaced, standard font, typed on 8˝ x 11 white paper. No onionskin. No illustrations.
B. One poem per page except categories which allow a second page; then staple pages of each copy.

C. On both copies, put category name and number in upper left corner. When applicable, identify the form in upper left corner under category number and name.
D. No author identification on first copy. On the second copy, place your name, address, and phone number in upper right corner. *Exception: Category #1.
E. Separate originals from author-identified duplicates and place each stack in numerical order, with original stack on top.
F. Prepare one 8˝ x 11 cover page with your name and address. List numbers of categories entered and titles of poem(s) entered in each category.
Mail all entries in one envelope, author-identified copies beneath unidentified copies, with cover sheet and check on top, to:

Any violation of rules will disqualify the entry.
No fees or poems will be returned except the Pearle M. Olsen Book manuscripts. A business-size (4 x 9) SASE with $.60 postage may be included to receive the winners list.
DECISIONS OF THE JUDGES ARE FINAL. WINNERS ARE ANNOUNCED AT THE ANNUAL USPS AWARDS FESTIVAL IN APRIL. Nonmember winners will receive information about the Awards Festival by April 1. This contest is judged by qualified persons who are not members of USPS.

Form: Terzanelle—a combination of the Terza Rima and Villanelle forms, where the second line of a stanza is repeated as the third line of the following stanza. Its characteristics include repeating triplets rather than quatrains in the body, with a concluding quatrain. The Terzanelle, then, is a modified villanelle. It is made up of 5 triplets or tercets and a concluding quatrain. Rhyme pattern: Repeated letters, whether upper or lower case, indicate rhyming words. Upper case letters indicate repeating lines.
ABA, bCB, dDC, dED, eFE; for the concluding quatrain, either aFAA or fFAA. Number of syllables varies; meter accent varies.

A. be solely the work of the entrant, who has been a resident of Utah for three consecutive years prior to the contest and an active member of USPS for the entire years of 2006, 2007, and renewed by Jan. 5, 2008
B. show originality in thought and expression of language
C. use imagery and show knowledge of poetic technique
MANUSCRIPT MUST:
A. contain 50 numbered pages of poems (no more or less). Poems may be published and unpublished, but manuscript as a whole must be original and unpublished
B. be single-spaced in clear black type
C. have no more than one poem per page, on one side of paper
D. have no more than 32 lines per page, with longer poems continued on subsequent
page(s)
E. contain a title page and a table of contents, not to be counted with the 50 pages of poems
F. be in good taste
G. have no illustrations, no bulky folders or binders, nor be bound or stapled (may be fastened with a large paper clip or binder clip)
H. contain no author identification
MANUSCRIPT MAY:
A. have section pages, not to be counted in the 50 pages of poems
B. contain previously published individual poems (permission for use not needed at this time)
C. include poems which have won cash prizes
D. contain poems which vary from traditional to modern
E. include poems with a deft, light touch, but a complete collection of light verse or cowboy poetry will not be considered

IDENTIFICATION ENVELOPE (business size 4x9 unsealed) MUST:
A. have author’s name and title of book typed on the outside (FOR CHAIR ONLY) in case there are duplicate titles
B. contain a card with the number and name of category, manuscript title, and the author’s name, address, and phone number
C. contain a short autobiography or career sketch
D. contain two photos of the author
E. contain sufficient stamps for return postage of complete manuscript
MAILING/RETURN OF MANUSCRIPT:
A. Place manuscript, ID envelope, entry fee payable to USPS, and an adequate self-addressed envelope for return of manuscript (stamps in ID envelope) ALL in one envelope addressed to the chair.
B. All but the first-place manuscript will be returned at the Awards Festival or by mail.
The Book Chair reserves the right to adjust the format of the winning book if necessary. Winner must be available through the summer of 2008 while the book is being prepared and printed; must also attend certain special events and must be present for the reading of the book at the October 2008 Poetry Concert. The above requirements may be waived or modified in unusual circumstances, at the discretion of the Book Chair, officers of the Laureates, and the president of USPS. All entrants are encouraged to attend the April Awards Festival.
No exceptions to these rules.
